The New Prep
In 1965, four sartorial Japanese creatives—Shosuke Ishizu, Toshiyuki Kurosu, Hajime Hasegawa, and Teruyoshi Hayashida—published Take Ivy, a chronicle of America’s elite Ivy League students and their everyday collegiate style.
It showcased the handsome look of young men busying about in Brooks Brothers jackets and chinos, as well as off-duty athletes in varsity sweaters paired with penny loafers.
Five decades later, the photo book is a cult classic. It not only cemented collegiate Americana as the guide to preppy dressing but has launched its trajectory beyond the campus gates.
This season, we take cues from the beloved sartorial bible and approach the style with a modern sensibility. Chambray shirts paired with camo joggers, light knits and vintage-washed denim, and chino shorts worn with horse-bit loafers, scroll on through for more on the new prep.
utilitarian materials and prints take on a handsomely relaxed silhouette
Clashing prints can be a good thing. Wear your block stripes with windowpane plaids for a bold take on off-duty athleisure.
Dress up your favorite denim jacket—preferably well-loved and worn-in—with candy stripes styled with a collared shirt and khakis. It couldn't get any preppier than this.
And, of course, loafers. Whether in horse-bit, penny, or the classic tassel. Always loafers.
